Interactive Visual Analysis of 4-Dimensional fields, processes & dynamics workshop
- Presented by: Magellium Ltd, NCEO, STFC, Exelis. This workshop is carried out in the context of an ESA project in order to specify a cross domain 4D+1 visualisation system. Although many visualisation tools for data processing exist, nothing compares to the skills, knowledge and eyes of an Expert. Our goal will be to answer this question: How can we provide the visualisation tools to explore and understand large datasets, and make decisions based on them?

Opinion: Infrastructure-based Visualization
- Visualization is a computer-supported process whereby meaningful information is extracted from raw data and mapped onto an appropriate visual representation. Its primary goal is to reduce the cognitive load of human users in handling the raw data by making use of the powerful but often underused human capacity for visual perception and reasoning. It is now a common knowledge that use of visualization by scientists saves time in making observations, gaining an overview and conducting comparative studies. In many scientific activities, visualization has become an indispensible tool that provides scientists with a means of organizing their data and insight (i.e., memory externalization), as well as visual stimuli for hypothesis generation and sense making...

A Virtual Research Environment for Cancer Imaging
- Over two-thirds of a million new men and women are affected by colorectal cancer each year and worldwide nearly 400,000 deaths are caused by this form of cancer. Medical imaging techniques such as MRI, computerised tomography (CT) and a combination of positron emission tomography (PET) with CT (PET/CT) have been used for detecting, staging and monitoring the evolution of patients with colorectal cancer. Medical specialists, i.e. radiologists, analyse the images to detect abnormalities and to determine treatment plans and effectiveness...

Data Data everywhere but how to consume it?
- We're told it's a data deluge, a tsunami or even a bonanza - whatever, there is a lot of data and certainly more than traditional research techniques could cope with. It's coming at us from all directions and if we can only process part of it then how do we know which part to do and how do we see patterns in the big picture? And if we're working with multiple different sources this problem rapidly gets worse.
