Interactive Visual Analysis of 4-Dimensional fields, processes & dynamics workshop

Presented by: Magellium Ltd, NCEO, STFC, Exelis. This workshop is carried out in the context of an ESA project in order to specify a cross domain 4D+1 visualisation system. Although many visualisation tools for data processing exist, nothing compares to the skills, knowledge and eyes of an Expert. Our goal will be to answer this question: How can we provide the visualisation tools to explore and understand large datasets, and make decisions based on them?

Opinion: Infrastructure-based Visualization

Visualization is a computer-supported process whereby meaningful information is extracted from raw data and mapped onto an appropriate visual representation. Its primary goal is to reduce the cognitive load of human users in handling the raw data by making use of the powerful but often underused human capacity for visual perception and reasoning. It is now a common knowledge that use of visualization by scientists saves time in making observations, gaining an overview and conducting comparative studies. In many scientific activities, visualization has become an indispensible tool that provides scientists with a means of organizing their data and insight (i.e., memory externalization), as well as visual stimuli for hypothesis generation and sense making...
